Description:MERWICK COTTAGE nOn the channel marker in front of Merwick Cottage is an Osprey nest which has been inhabited for the past 20 years. Much like Merwick’s owners, the family just seems to keep coming back –just like you will! For the past five years, eagles have nested on the island in front of the house. You will love how the rich history of the Five Islands section of Georgetown blends with the contemporary style of Merwick Cottage. nWhen we asked the owners if there was any information they would like to share with future guests, we received these wonderful reponses. nMy favorite place to walk in Five Islands is Ledgemere Road, a side road just above the Five Islands wharf. It is a dirt road running parallel to the edge of the Sheepscot Bay for almost a mile (although it becomes private at some point). There is a strip of woods between the road and the water, part of which is owned by the Nature Conservancy. There are a couple of parking spots at the Nature Conservancy entrance as well. There is a small beach in a tiny inlet across from Hen Island, and you can walk out on the granite ledges right next to the water where the surf crashes. The woods around are pine, and in the summer Ledgemere Road smells of balsam. I have been scolded by squirrels for walking there but otherwise it is very peaceful. nSometimes, as we got older, the water from the ponds permitted a longer frolic than the ocean. Charles Pond, which is walking distance, is cool and deep. Sewell Pond, off of Old Stage Road, and a short hike from the road through a nature preserve is a favorite, rope-swinging place to play. The most convenient place to cool off, on very hot days, of off the dock. The ocean water is so cold, you will be comfortably refreshed for quite a long time on the hottest days. nMy favorite time of day is dawn, when the sun breaks over the horizon - lavenders, blues, golds, and scarlets silhouette the trees, boats and rocks. The song birds songs echo across the water from the islands. The full moon on the water is hypnotizing and relaxing. Sometimes you can get both - a rising sun and a setting moon. nMy very favorite thing about Maine and especially Five Islands is the smell of the fresh ocean air mingled with pine and roses. I suppose I could be a millionaire if I were able to bottle that and sell it. There is nothing like it in all the world. nSO MUCH TO SEE, SO MUCH TO DO! nFrom the house atop a rise, you have stunning views of the fishing village of Five Islands, the Sheepscot Bay and out to the open ocean. Head on down to your private dock and float, 8’ mooring and over 200 feet of shore front. Bring your own boats or rent locally for a spectacular day of exploration along this beautiful stretch of rocky coast line. Fish, swim, float or simply relax. You are within walking distance of a wonderful lobster pound and, coincidentally, the kitchen has the needed pots and crackers to serve up a bountiful lobster dinner! There are miles of hiking and biking trails in Georgetown and more on preserved lands throughout the Mid-coast area. nHead over to Reid State Park to enjoy over a mile of sandy beaches, into Bath for shopping, souvenirs and restaurants or explore the many museums and galleries in the area. A week will fly by before you can see all there is to see, so you better book two! nTHE HOUSE nMerwick Cottage is a two-story contemporary home overlooking Sheepscot Bay and the open Atlantic beyond. Views can be enjoyed from the living room, master bedroom and the two open decks. The expansive lawn slopes away from the house and down to the private dock, float and 200’ of shoreline. nThe master bedroom has a Queen Bed and sliders to an open deck with that spectacular view. An incredible spot for that early morning cup of coffee! Also on this floor are two additional bedrooms, one with a Double Bed and one with a Trundle Bed (Two Singles) and a Full Bathroom. nThe open concept design includes a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and a living area with sliding glass doors to an open deck with another spectacular set of views! After a dip in the ocean, there is a ¾ (shower) bathroom in the basement! nThe third building to be built on this site, Merwick Cottage was built in 1993 on an acre of land that has been in the family since 1935. The first two structures, burnt in area forest fires, have been known by the names Rockmere and Ledgemere since the very early 1900’s. The name Merwick comes from the French word Mer meaning ocean and the German word wick meaning area.
